Incontinence refers to the inability to control one’s excretion of bowel and urine. It usually occurs because of the loss of storage capacity, nerve damage, muscle damage. Incontinence may also be due to pelvic floor dysfunction, and fecal impaction. This can affect the patient’s social life, as it causes emotional distress. Fecal incontinence will also lead to skin irritation as the exterior surface around the anus is extremely sensitive, and constant fecal excretion will lead to pain due to friction.
With the appropriate homecare medical supplies, patients can regain the quality of life and feel more comfortable, whether they are at home or outside socializing. For example, disposable adult briefs and belted undergarments can offer maximum absorbency for heavy bladders. Adult briefs come in different sizes and they are one of the most economical options. Belted undergarments are able to absorb a high amount of liquid and the undergarments are held in place with elastic bands.
Other useful home medical products include protective pants, booster pads, bladder control pads and underpads. Protective pants are reusable with elastic bands at the waist and around the legs. These pants are used with disposable pads and liners to prevent leakage. Booster pads offer extra absorption to the patient’s protective underwear or adult briefs. Bladder control pads, on the other hand, are designed to cope with a small amount of urine leakage; they are suitable for men and women.
For many incontinence patients, sleeping can become a trouble. Home medical products, such as underpads and bed pads, can help minimize the issues involved. Patients can also purchase chair pads of different sizes to comfortably relax on their couch and bed. For patients who feel discomfort on the underpads, they can choose a breathable type which allows more air circulation. To prevent soiling the bed sheets, patients may choose to use waterproof sheets, as they are easier to clean.
For patients with fecal incontinence, they may need a fecal collector. The collector comes with a tap to be used with the bedside drain unit. It also features a gas and odor filter to deodorize the feces and gas. To clean the anus without causing irritation, many disposable wipes will do the job well. These wipes are gentle to sensitive skin while good cleaning effects.
In addition to these home healthcare supplies, there are other home remedies that can ease the negative effects of incontinence. Eating smaller meals with a high fiber diet may help lessen the number of involuntary fecal excretions.
