This attaches to your SUV’s already-existing crossbars and roof rack, or to the mounting clips and feet connecting to your SUV’s rain gutters or upper door frame. If your SUV already comes equipped with things that can support the bike mount, the overall cost can be reduced. Clearly, the disadvantage is if your SUV doesn’t have these things yet. Then you’d have to buy the necessary equipment so you can use this type of bike rack, doubling your expenses. Also, if you’re not much of a DIY man, you could find the complicated installation process unappealing.
The hitch-mounted carrier
This rack may come in a variety of sizes to match the hitch your SUV has. The prices also vary. This is easier to install than its roof-hitch counterpart, and it is easier to lift and remove as well. However, this could block your view from the rear; your bike could get damaged when you’re backing or you could get a ticket for view obstruction. Also, if your SUV doesn’t have a hitch yet, you’d have to purchase one first for this carrier to work, thereby incurring another set of expenses.
