Mobility Lifts Can Change Lives by Bob Lundin
Mobility is a challenge for many people, in addition to handicapped persons. Many people who are able to walk short distances cannot walk up and down stairs, climb into vehicles easily, or travel with ease. And it’s not just traveling from home to another location, but moving around the home as well that is often difficult. Types of Mobility Lifts
Wheelchair Lifts for the Vehicle: Several types of vehicles can be modified to allow the lifting of a wheelchair into the vehicle, or carrying the wheelchair on the back of the vehicle. These can be platform lifts, boom lifts, ramps or any other device intended to take the wheelchair into the car. In addition, some platform lifts allow the disabled person to remain in the wheelchair, locking it in place and traveling in the vehicle that way.
Wheelchair Lifts for the Home: Wheelchair lifts for the home are generally designed to keep the disabled person in the wheelchair and take them to another level in the home. Ramps can be used for this purpose, as well as vertical lifts. Of course, the most common vertical lift is simply an elevator with which we are all familiar, but they are often too costly to be installed in the home. Other mobility lifts may be useful in the home as well.
Chair Lifts for the Vehicle or Home: Chair lifts can be added to vehicles, RVs, porches, stairs, or anywhere else that has a point of attachment where a disabled person needs to go to an elevated location. Generally, the disabled person is able to take themselves from the wheelchair to the lift and operate the lift to take them to the desired location. Chair lifts on stairs are the most familiar ones but they can be installed in a number of locations. Chair lifts do not bring the wheelchair or scooter along and are often for people with restricted mobility but who can walk with help from a cane or walker. These can even be installed on large equipment allowing disabled persons to continue working.
When mobility is a challenge, mobility lifts can be a simple, cost effective solution. Every one values the independence that comes with being mobile and mobility lifts can give that independence back to many people whose movement is restricted in some way.
