The Evolution of the Medical Stethoscope

Although the medical stethoscope was invented way back in the 19th century, they are still considered to be one of the most useful instruments in medical science today. The stethoscope was invented by French physician, Rene Laennec in 1816 and consisted only of a simple wooden tube, which looked very much like a trumpet. The first stethoscope was monoaural, which means that the sound can only be heard with one ear.

In 1829, articulated joints were incorporated into the design to make it more flexible. The actual design for this particular model is still very sketchy, and historians have no idea on how exactly it was designed and what additional materials were used. In 1840 however, Golding Bird published the very first description of a medical stethoscope, which he described as a single earpiece gadget. He also mentioned in his work a previous model which he no longer elaborated in recounting.

The very first binaural stethoscope was invented in 1851 by Arthur Leared, and later on, was modified and perfected by George Cammann. His design was released for commercial production and is considered to be the most basic framework for today’s modern stethoscopes. Apart from that, George Cammann also published a very important diagnostic method, only made possible by a binaural stethoscope, called auscultation.

In 1873, another medical stethoscope design was released in the market which allowed it to be connected to various locations producing a stereo-like effect. This model however, did not last long in use.

One of the most significant stethoscope designs in history was made by Rappaport and Sprague in the 1940’s. The framework consisted of two sides: one for use in respiratory auscultation and the other, for cardiac auscultation. This has become a standard design for many of the modern stethoscopes today. Rappaport and Sprague’s design however was very heavy and short. It had 2 latex rubber tubes connected to binaural ear tubes made out of chrome-plated brass.

In the 1960s, Dr. David Littman created a lighter version of Rappaport and Sprague’s design, with improved acoustics. Over the next years, he worked on redesigning the medical stethoscope – from inventing the Cardiology tubing to creating even better acoustics.

The most modern stethoscope design available in the market today is the electric stethoscope. The small machine can convert acoustic sound to electrical signals, which can be processed and amplified for better listening. However, the stethoscope does not come without its own disadvantages. It can only amplify mid-range sounds and not the low and high-range frequencies. Apart from that, sound amplification can also include electrical noise, or sounds that do not necessarily come from the body. Some electric stethoscopes come with a direct audio output and a recording device which allow doctors to record the sound and review it for better diagnosis.

Digital or acoustic medical stethoscopes are considered to be one of the most important tools in medical science today. These instruments allow doctors to listen to body sounds which are beyond the normal human ears’ capacity to detect- from the beating of the heart, the flow of the blood, to the movement of food through the digestive system. Information produced by a medical stethoscope is essential for proper diagnosis and most importantly, treatment.
